The earliest known style was a type of (schmatta) A cloth turban style wrap that some artists would wear around their head to protect them from sun exposure and cold in the winter. They were easy to make and stylish; distinguishing the artists from amongst their peers. If you have any photos of artists dodding their chapeau feel free to post I would be happy to add it to the collection.
